WINDHAM – Windham-Ashland-Jewett took control early and never let up, powering past Hunter-Tannersville, 19-0, in a varsity girls softball game at Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School on Weds., April 22 that was shortened to 5 innings.
The WAJCS Warriors wasted little time setting the tone. They pushed 3 runs across in the first inning, then blew the game open in the second, sending a steady stream of hitters to the plate while scoring 9 runs. By the time the HTC Wildcats were able to escape the inning, WAJCS had built a commanding lead and firmly seized momentum.
From there, it was more of the same. The Warriors added 6 runs in the third inning and tacked on another in the fourth, continuing to apply constant pressure with timely hits, patient at-bats and aggressive baserunning.
Hannah Tuttle set the tone in the circle for WAJCS. The right-hander allowed just 1 hit over 5 innings while striking out 14 total, never allowing HTC to find any rhythm at the plate. She worked efficiently throughout the afternoon and rarely faced trouble.
Tuttle also contributed offensively, blasting a home run in the third inning as part of the Warriors’ continued surge.
The lineup around her produced consistently all game. Piper Cohane and Gianna Garzone each finished with 2 hits, while Garzone drove in 3 runs. Kylie Jordan delivered a key swing in the second inning with a 2-run double and later crossed the plate 3 times. WAJCS also showed patience at the plate, drawing multiple walks and capitalizing on opportunities to extend innings.
HTC struggled to generate offense against Tuttle’s pitching. Abigail Dwon accounted for the Wildcats’ lone hit, finishing 1 for 2, as the team struck out 14 times overall.
Juliana Trani started in the circle for HTC and battled through a difficult opening stretch, allowing 17 runs over the first 2 innings, 12 of them earned. Dwon came on in relief and was able to slow things down somewhat over the final 2 innings.
Defensively, WAJCS backed up its pitcher with a clean performance, avoiding errors, limiting extra chances and shutting down any threats that did develop. The combination of strong pitching, steady defense and relentless offense proved more than enough as the Warriors rolled to the 5-inning victory over the Wildcats.
