PRATTSVILLE – We want to thank all our highway department workers, State and Local, for keeping our highways and byways cleared and passable. In our area, roads are an everyday necessity for food shopping and medical appointments. Thank you. And to those individuals who clear our personal driveways and parking lots – a big thank you.

Next Saturday, the 14th, is Valentine’s Day so get those cards and special thanks ready for your loved ones. Everyone likes those special remembrances. Happy Valentine’s Day to all. Speaking of upcoming events……

Yes, Sunday the 8th is the Superbowl but sans our Bills. Oh well. Then the week of the 16th starting with Presidents Day and continuing on with Presidents Week, Ash Wednesday is the 18th, ushering in Lent – Easter is early this year. Get your schedule in order.

We wish friend and neighbor Hank Gockel of Grand Gorge a timely return to good health. We send Hank and his family our prayers and best wishes. Speaking of Hank’s family, his good wife is our Postmaster Linda Murray Gockel and she keeps us up to date on his progress.

Gerri Barry of Conesville is sent get well wishes. Gerri spent some time on the get well list and at this time not sure of her diagnosis. Gerri is a nurse and continues working part time and she also did some snow clearing after our storm, which is a no-no. But Gerri is very active and she keeps busy but snow shoveling should be on her “NO” list. Gerri’s Auxiliary sisters of her Unit 1764 and Virgil E. Deyo ALA Unit 1327 wish her good health and send prayers for a speedy and complete recovery. The party awaits you Gerri.

“On Monday, January 26, the day after the big snow storm, a “Help Thy Neighbor” team was activated from Discover Life Church, [Prattsville]. Armed with a plow truck and several shovels, Pastor DeWitt Olmstead and John Young of Prattsville and Justin and Danielle Ball of Middleburgh set out to help several residents who would not have been able to deal with the snow by themselves. They plowed driveways and shoveled paths and steps, in all helping six or seven residents, mostly in Prattsville, but also one in Ashland and one in Grand Gorge. Thanks for caring in such a practical way! Nathan and Kristy Miles, from the Jewett/Hunter area, took six of their children to the Ice Harvest at Hanford Mills last Saturday, January. 31. They participated in cutting blocks of ice from the mill pond to be stored in the ice house for summer use, just like in the olden days before refrigeration. The ice will be used next summer for the Ice Cream Festival! Daughter Lily couldn't go because she was busy at her job serving customers at Young's Ace Hardware.” See picture of visitors taking part in ice fishing, the weather was all that an ice event planner could hope for – ZERO. The above was submitted by reader Joyce DeVivo of Grand gorge. Thanks Joyce and keep sending your uplifting news.

Special thoughts go out to Cathy Brainerd Martino on the loss of her pet Angel. Angel was a rescue dog and Cathy made sure Angel’s last days were filled with love and comfort. Now Cathy needs some TLC as she is suffering from the latest “bug”. Cathy is not letting that keep her inactive as she continues doing community service for the Mountain Top Food Pantry, helping those in need keep their food shelves full, plus working at the Soup and Community Luncheons the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at UMC Kaaterskill Church, Main Street, Tannersville.

This is best wishes to the Breigle ladies. Daughter Laura was involved in an accident in December so mom Lana had to follow suit in January. Thankfully everyone is OK but those two accidents put a cramp in their employment, school and home lives. We wish them better luck in 2026 starting NOW.

Heard that Ron Fancher, alumni of Gilboa Conesville CS Class of 1958, had a surprise 85th Birthday last week. Daughters Pam and Rhonda and their families made this special for Ron. You can only have an 85th surprise birthday party once in your lifetime. Ron’s birthday is December 29.
