One of the more common sayings in the northwestern Catskills is, “If you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes.” This morning began with cold rain that changed to sleet by 9 a.m. By 11 a.m., flurries mixed with steady, blowing snow. By midafternoon, lawns had a light coating, and forsythia and early blooming cherry blossoms took on a brief frosty cover.
Forest vistas atop Dry Brook in Arkville and along Hog Mountain Road at higher elevations picked up nearly an inch of snow. Along Route 28 between Fleischmanns and Margaretville, the mountains were capped in white, with fog drifting as clouds gave way to sun by 3 p.m.
By 6 p.m., spring had erased every trace of the brief winter interlude.
