During April 17th Senior Night, the Sharon Springs/CV-S Varsity Baseball team won 19 - 13 against Worcester (coached by Eric Haley) at their Sharon Springs home field of Cherry Valley-Springfield. After a rainy morning, the sun came out in time for all the Cherry Valley-Springfield fields and playground to come to life with noise, excitement, and multiple sports meets, announcements, and games happening all at once along the grounds. These teams enjoyed the opportunity to go head-to-head and shared a camaraderie; laughing together, encouraging each other, and checking to make sure everyone was okay after getting hit with a ball or having a rough landing at base. These two photos show Sharon Springs players Lucas Pokorny (#3), and Brian Duncan (#5) working together to get the ball to first base and having fun getting to connect with a player from the Worcester team. Pokorny is credited with four runs and pitched at the beginning of the game. Duncan accomplished one run at bat and three strikeouts as pitcher.
Before the game began, both teams lined up on the diamond. Sharon Springs CSD Principal-Superintendent, Tom Yorke, welcomed everyone to Senior Night and included, “Thank you to the Cherry Valley-Springfield Board of Education, administration, and community for your partnership in providing athletic opportunities for our students. It is greatly appreciated and reflects the heart of what we do as educators.” Yorke also expressed gratitude to their coaches, ADs, staff, and families, “For the support and commitment that make nights like this possible.” Honored seniors were called up to receive a gift from Athletic Director Coach Chris Smith. Worcester seniors: Matthew Sanders, Liam Serdy, Grayson Basso, and Johnny Leveski. For Sharon Springs, the senior star of the night was Michael Cashman (#23), who played soccer and basketball in addition to baseball this year, and whose family stood with him: Cheryl Smith, Tom Schilde, and (sister) Hailey Cashman. Also sitting with the family and holding a senior sign in the crowd was Tori France. Cashman scored three runs at bat and pitched five strikeouts during the game. While Cashman was pitching, coaches shared supportive tips and a shout from the crowd added, “Believe in yourself the way we believe in you!” Congratulations to Michael Cashman, all the recognized seniors, and to Sharon Springs for your win!
