MIDDLEBURGH - A large rose garden may soon be blooming in a Middleburgh village park.

Village trustee Amanda Fernandez Monday night said she was recently approached by a community member who "knows her roses" about starting a rose garden in a village park.

After a discussion, board members gave Trustee Fernandez the go ahead to locate a rose garden in a village park. Trustee Fernandez said a meeting will be held soon to gather volunteers for the project.

Several locations were discussed before a section of Badgely Park was targeted. Timothy Murphy Park was dismissed because it is in the floodplain, a section by the Depot does not have enough space, and there is too much shade in the Memorial Park on upper Main Street.

"Roses," she noted, "can stand flooding but not standing water.

Trustee Fernandez noted that it is a long-term project and will take years to complete.

Trustee Bob Tinker said it was "a wonderful idea."

The community members are willing to help with maintenance and other groups such as the Rotary will be contacted, Trustee Fernandez added.

Rotary members at Monday's meeting said they will bring up the issue at a meeting.
