RICHMONDVILLE — New York state recorded 138 fire-related fatalities in 2024, the highest number of any state in the nation, according to data released ahead of an upcoming public safety initiative.
In response to the rising death toll, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control is partnering with the Richmondville Fire Department to host a special informational program. The event is scheduled for Thursday, March 19, at 6 p.m. at the Richmondville Fire Department.
The seminar will focus on two primary areas of concern: the emerging dangers of lithium-ion battery safety and general residential fire prevention.
"Our state is number one on the list for fire fatalities," organizers said in a statement. "Come and help us spread awareness, prevent, and protect your family against fires."
The urgency of the program is underscored by recent local incidents, including a house fire in nearby Cobleskill that investigators determined was caused by a lithium-ion battery. These batteries, commonly found in cell phones, laptops, and e-bikes, have become a focal point for fire officials due to their potential for rapid, intense combustion.
Attendees will have access to educational handouts and safety resources during the session. Local residents seeking more information are encouraged to contact the department at 518-294-7923.
