January is just about done.  It’s been quite the month weather-wise.  Good for all the winter sports we have in our area.  The only thing I use ski poles for is to help me remain upright when I walk outside in the snow.

Mary and Steve Palazzolo attended a family get together with Steve’s sister Francine and Tony in Milford, PA, Jan 24.  Francine’s three children were there along with Steve’s other sister, Yolanda and Richie who came from NJ. 

Ariana Creech celebrates her birthday on Thursday, Jan. 29.

Friday, Jan. 30 we wish Shirley Van Valkenburgh a very happy birthday.

Bonnie Pilaar-Diamond’s birthday is Jan. 30.

Little Miss Charlotte Hale Clark has her birthday on Sunday, Feb. 1.

Happy birthday to Rose Williams on Monday, Feb. 2.

Emma Dwon’s birthday is Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Lexington/West Kill UMC Administrative Council meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 4:30 p.m. in the church hall.

Fellowship Lunch is held the second and fourth Tuesday every month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kaaterskill UMC, Main Street Tannersville.  Stop by for the fellowship and the delicious free meal, all are welcome.

The annual Freeze Your Butt Off for Wildlife Bake Sale (as Missy Runyon always called it), is Saturday, Feb. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sunoco Gas Station, 6360 Main Street, Tannersville.  This annual bake sale is a crucial fundraiser that helps Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center care for injured and orphaned NYS wildlife.  They don’t receive funding from any agencies and FFF counts on your generosity to keep their efforts going.  Message Dave and let him know what you can bake for FFF and to arrange for drop off or pick up if necessary.  You can also drop off your baked goods on Saturday, Feb. 14 morning at the Sunoco in Tannersville.

Here are ongoing events at the Hunter Public Library, 7965, Main Street, Hunter:  Knitting/Crocheting Circle every Monday 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., all ages and levels welcome;  every Thursday at 11 a.m.,Yoga with Jessa—one hour classes, bring water bottle and an open mind.  Chairs are available and encouraged; Skillful Aging Workshop on the first Wednesday of every month at 11 a.m. with Gail Spindell, LCS.  To attend contact Hunter Public Library at 518-263-4655 to reserve a space. 

The Greene County Senior Angels Fund provides emergency financial assistance to eligible seniors who are Greene County residents.  Senior citizens who are residents of Greene County and are experiencing a financial hardship may benefit from the Senior Angels Fund.  The fund provides emergency financial assistance to eligible Greene County seniors. Monies from the fund can be used to pay for both health-related expenses, like health insurance premiums, co-pays, coinsurance and deductibles and for household expenses like rent, utility payments and transportation.  Additionally, the staff can help identify other resources that may be available to you.  To apply for assistance from the Senior Angels Fund, please complete a brief application in person or online at www.columbiahealthnet.org/programs/senior_angels/.  For more information, please call 518-719-3556 or visit Greene County Department of Human Services at 411 Main Street, Catskill, NY 12414.

There will be a Female Military Appreciation Dinner on Sunday, March 1, 2 p.m. at the Frederick A. Van Loan Hall, Athens American Legion, Second Street, Athens.  Female veterans are free and all other guests are $5.  For information or to RSVP, please call Gordon at 518-567-5529.

A representative from Greene County Department of Human Services will be available with information and for questions at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Jewett Senior Service Center on understanding your Medicare benefits and making the most of your Medicare coverage.  If you would like to stay for lunch, please call 518-263-4392 at least a day in advance to reserve your meal.

The Greene County Senior Nutrition Program menu for the week of Feb. 2 – Feb. 6 is as follows:  Monday—Sloppy Joes, cauliflower/broccoli medley, white rice, tropical fruit; Tuesday—Baked cod with lemon butter sauce, spinach, brown rice pilaf, juice, pears; Wednesday—Chicken Divan, Sonoma vegetable mix, white rice, chocolate chip cookies; Thursday—Meatball sub, Italian mixed vegetables, Italian pasta salad, peach crisp with whipped topping; Friday—Macaroni and cheese, stewed tomatoes, three-bean salad, fresh fruit.  All persons and older are invited to attend.  Meals served at noon, suggested $4 donation for each meal.  Congregate reservations are required by noon at least a day in advance.  If you reserve a meal and are unable to attend, please call as soon as you can to cancel.  The number to call for the Senior Service Center at the Jewett Municipal Building, 3547 Route 23C, Jewett is 518-263-4392.

Monday, Feb. 2 is Groundhog Day.  Six more weeks of winter?  Just asking, what do you think?  On the calendar the First Day of Spring is March 20.

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday March 8.
