MIDDLEBURGH - The Middleburgh Rotary will be sponsoring several big events in 2026, though it is very doubtful that the once-popular canoe races will be one of them.
Rotary members Katelynne Schuttig and Brenda Ferraro-Hanson spoke to the Middleburgh village board Monday night about Rotary events coming up for 2026.
Events include: the Rotary chicken barbecue will be on March 14 from 2 to 4pm at the Reformed Church and the Sloughter 5K will be on May 22. Volunteers are needed for the race. That is usually the night of the first Fourth Friday in the village.
In July, the popular arts and crafts show will be shifted from late in the month to the July 4 weekend of Middleburgh celebration of the United States' 250th anniversary.
Village trustee Bob Tinker asked about the future of the canoe races, which have not been held for several years.
It is difficult to sponsor the races since there are not a lot of active members and the race is "a big project," she added. The race has to have more volunteers than the Sloughter 5K because of safety concerns.
Ms. Schuttig said she "will put it out there" to Rotary members about the race.
Trustee Tinker said the race was "a nice event" and there may be other volunteers who could help out.
The race, which was last run about 10 years ago, started at the parking area off of Route 30 in Fultonham and ended in the creek near Timothy Murphy Park.
