TANNERSVILLE – Spring Is Here & It’s Countdown Time to the Earth Day Celebration!

2026 Mountain Top Earth Day Celebration is taking place on Saturday, April 25th from 9am to 2pm. Now in its 8th year, the theme of the Mountain Top Earth Day Celebration has always been Flora, Fauna & Free Family Fun!

The event kicks off at 9am at Fromer Market Gardens with a Spring Garden Workshop from Cornell Cooperative Extension. At 10:15, head over to the Mountain Top Library for the opening event and ribbon cutting ceremony, where our local officials make brief statements on the significance of Earth Day and the mountaintop.

The Mountain Top Earth Day Celebration is a unique and singular event, as it promotes stewardship of the local flora & fauna and delivers a schedule packed with family-friendly activities & presentations.

At 10:45 am, Hunter Town Historian Dede Thorpe will speak about our environmental history. At 11 am, local artist & author Matt Bua will present Who Built the Old Stone Walls of the Northeast? This program is designed for all ages, and explores the rich mysteries of these regional creations & formations.

Genevieve Salerno & Mellow the Owl will discuss the impact of wildlife rehabilitation on behalf of Friends of the Feathered & Furry. The talk is at 12:30pm, but you can stop in to visit Mellow any time throughout the day!

“The Birdman” from Robinson’s Wildlife Lectures will be presenting at 1 pm this year. This incredibly popular & educational program features a variety of live birds of prey and reptiles.

Throughout the day there will be tons to do, including “Crafts for Everyone!” This year, Susan Kukle and Sheila Trautman will be facilitating a Quilt Mural Art Project, which will be displayed outside of the library throughout the summer. Maureen Garcia will be teaching crafters how to construct Recycled Flower Sculptures out of recycled materials. You can take home your creations, or you can add them to Rip’s Magical Garden, located outside of the library! Whichever projects you choose, make sure you look up once and a while to check out Forever Green, a Short Film selection from the Woodstock Film Festival, which will be playing on loop. Marvin Seligman will also have a special exhibit in the library gallery, Schoharie Connections, detailing the intricacies of our watershed.

This year, we will also be welcoming a new exhibitor, Al Gori, who will be setting up his solar-powered Merry-Go-Round! Made of entirely recycled materials, this Homespun Merry-Go-Round turns at a gentle 4 rpm, and can carry 2 passengers up to 250 lbs. each.

It even has an infant seat so the smallest riders can take a spin!

Other exhibitors this year will include representatives from the Hunter Rail Trail, the Mountain Top Historical Society, Mountain Top Arboretum, The Thomas Cole House, Peace Village, Camp Catskill, the Sierra Club, Fromer Market Gardens, Cornell Cooperative, and the Catskill Center. There is also an opportunity to sign up for Trail Clean Up, which will take place on Saturday, May 2nd.

As always, Earth Day is TOTALLY FREE, and once again Greene County Soil & Water will be dropping off dozens of Free trees & saplings. You can also choose among thousands of free seeds at the Mountain Top Library. If you don’t have any gardening tools, we have some available to borrow! You might want to bring a few dollars for the bake sale, coordinated by Molly Hursh, as all the proceeds support the Friends of the Mountain Top Library.
