MIDDLEBURGH — The village of Middleburgh celebrated its first "Middleburgh is for Sweethearts" banquet Saturday, marking the start of a new local tradition with an intimate ceremony at Hubie’s Restaurant.
The Feb. 28 event served as the official inauguration of the 2026 Sweetheart Royal Court. Mark and Patty Wainwright were crowned King and Queen by James and Linda Schilling, who led a toast to the couple's upcoming year of reign.
While the evening was a celebration, organizers noted the absence of the crowned Prince and Princess, Rusty and Joan Wissert. Community members were asked to keep the couple in their thoughts as Princess Joan continues her recovery from an undisclosed illness.
Following a dinner featuring appetizers of bacon-wrapped shrimp and mozzarella sticks, the celebration moved to the Yellow Dog Tavern. There, Queen Patty invited guests for an evening of music provided by DJ Brian Keller.
During the festivities, Claudia and Tanner Ludwin were announced as the winners of a "Dinner for Two" drawing. The win officially inducts the Ludwins into this year's Royal Court.
The Ludwins will serve as the guests of honor at next year’s gala. Event coordinator James Schilling indicated that plans are already underway to expand the event for 2027.
"We are looking toward a formal black-tie and gown evening at one of Middleburgh’s premier venues," Schilling said, though he declined to provide further specifics on the upcoming location.
