MIDDLEBURGH - Middleburgh village officials are seeking bids for a section of sidewalks on Railroad Avenue and may be looking to replace more sidewalks in 2026.
At their year-end meeting in December, board members transferred $20,000 into the sidewalk replacement fund for the new year.
On Monday, village board members approved a request for proposals for a section of sidewalk on upper Railroad Avenue that "need a little TLC," Mayor Tim Knight said.
The sidewalk replacement is for 260 feet with no curb stretching from the Middleburgh firehouse to Sheldon Avenue.
The sidewalk is to be four-feet wide by six-inches deep with one blind detector tile.
Bids are due by February 27.
DPW Superintendent Cole Keyser said that three trees will have to be taken down because of their roots before the sidewalk is replaced. Two of the trees are sizable and the removal may be costly.
In addition to the replacement of the sidewalk on Railroad, the village will look into replacing some sections on Main Street. The areas would be in the business district, including one by Pasta and Grill.
Trustee Sheryl Adams said the village should replace them if they can. Trustee Bob Tinker wondered if the village grant committee could find funds for the work.
Mr. Keyser noted that the village would have to work with the state because Main Street is a state highway.
Mayor Knight asked Trustee Adams to locate sections on Main Street that need to be replaced and the board would discuss it again in the future.
The village has replaced several sidewalks over the last few years.
Last August, Danforth Avenue residents received new sidewalks.
The village received two bids for the work last summer. The low bid was from Schoenecker Construction at $24,684 and the other bid was $29,000 from MSL Construction. Board members awarded the bid to MSL in August.
In 2024, the village replaced sidewalks on Wells and Danforth Avenues, and Lower Grove Street.
