MARGARETVILLE — Margaretville Central School (MCS) is pleased to announce the formation of a new student Volleyball Club, expanding opportunities for student engagement and physical activity.

The initiative began when MCS Spanish Teacher Caitlin Sanford approached school administrators to explore the possibility of starting a volleyball team. After identifying strong student interest, Ms. Sanford worked with the district to determine the necessary steps to establish the program at the club level, including pursuing appropriate coaching certification and securing gymnasium time. Ms. Sanford brings personal experience to the role, having played volleyball in club programs similar to MCS’s new organization.

At this time, volleyball operates as a school club sport. Club sports at MCS function similarly to intramurals: students organize and practice together, with activities focused on skill development, teamwork, and recreation. There is no outside competition during the club phase; participants scrimmage and play among themselves.

Student participation has been both strong and encouraging. Eight students regularly attend practices, with total attendance reaching as many as 22 participants at certain sessions. The club is open to students in grades 9–12, with the majority of participants currently in grades 9 and 10. Practices were held after school in the weeks leading up to the winter basketball season and continued on Sunday evenings throughout the winter months. The group looks forward to resuming after-school gym practices this spring.

The district will maintain the club model for at least the next year. Transitioning beyond club status to an interscholastic team remains a possibility and would depend on sustained student commitment and the availability of a suitable athletic league. Currently, the Delaware League does not offer volleyball competition. Should interest continue to grow, the district would explore potential scheduling opportunities with neighboring schools through conferences such as the Midstate Athletic Conference (MAC), which includes Delhi and Walton.

Margaretville Central School remains committed to supporting student-driven initiatives and providing meaningful extracurricular opportunities that foster teamwork, wellness, and school spirit.
