MARGARETVILLE  — Margaretville Central School has announced its proposed budget for the 2026–2027 school year, reflecting a continued commitment to providing high-quality, innovative, and inclusive educational opportunities for all students. The proposed budget totals $14,132,504, representing a 2.06% increase over the current year.

The budget was developed through a comprehensive and collaborative process that includes input from administrators, departments, and ongoing review of the district’s five-year financial plan. The spending plan is structured across three components—administrative, capital, and program—to ensure a balanced approach that supports both operational needs and student learning.

The administrative portion of the budget reflects increases related to staffing and employee benefits. The capital budget includes modest growth tied to facilities, transportation, and debt service. The program budget, which directly supports classroom instruction and student services, remains a priority, with careful consideration given to staffing and program adjustments to meet student needs.

The proposed property tax levy increase is 4.21%, with final tax rates to be determined based on property assessments and equalization rates. To maintain programs while managing costs, the district plans to utilize fund balance and reserves. However, district officials note that this approach is not sustainable indefinitely and may require difficult decisions in future years, including potential reductions to staffing or programs if additional revenue is not secured, while also pursuing strategies such as bringing programs in-house where feasible to reduce costs and strengthen program delivery.

“Margaretville has a great deal to be proud of when it comes to our academic programs and the opportunities we provide for students,” said Superintendent Michelle Osterhoudt. “At the same time, we are committed to addressing the financial challenges ahead in a thoughtful and responsible way. Our goal is to preserve the strength of our programs while working diligently to put the district on a more sustainable financial path.”

Margaretville Central School continues to pursue external funding opportunities to support student programs and offset local costs. Recent grant funding has helped enhance district resources, including support for new broadcasting equipment and the acquisition of an electric school bus and charging infrastructure. The district continues to explore regionalization and shared service opportunities as a way to improve efficiency, expand offerings, and help manage long-term budget pressures.

The proposed budget supports key initiatives aligned with the district’s vision, including expanded academic offerings, career and technical opportunities, and strengthened community partnerships. A public hearing will be held on Tuesday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. in the school library.

The budget vote will take place on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Margaretville Central School cafeteria. All eligible district residents are encouraged to participate.
