Riley Handy and Dick Frank work on the wooden spindles at Veterans Park, Cobleskill

COBLESKILL — Riley Handy, an eleventh‑grade student at Cobleskill‑Richmondville Central School, spent part of his Saturday lending a hand in the ongoing restoration of the historic cannon in Veterans Park. Working alongside community volunteer Dick Frank, Riley devoted an hour and a half to sanding and smoothing the wooden spindles on the cannon’s newly refurbished wheels.

The project is part of a broader effort to preserve the park’s historic features, and the cannon will receive a fresh coat of paint in the near future. Riley’s volunteer hours will count toward the service requirements he is completing on his path to earning the rank of Eagle Scout.

This restoration effort was coordinated by Donna Gunzinger, who continues to organize community involvement in maintaining Veterans Park.
