COBLESKILL – Family members who lead nationally ranked programs at the same time is an unusual happenstance. However, former Cobleskill Richmondville and SUNY Cobleskill graduates are guiding their respective teams to national prominence this season.
Brennan McCarthy begins his 11th year as head basketball coach at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA. The Spartans are coming off a 23-6 record in 2024 and currently are 22-3 for the 2025-26 season. Northampton is nationally ranked 8th in the country heading into the playoff season. McCarthy, who also serves as the college’s Assistant Athletic Director, has amassed over 200 wins in his first 10 years at Northampton, while becoming the school’s all-time winningest basketball coach during the 2024-25 season. During the 2023 season led the Spartans to a school record 30 wins finishing in fourth at the NJCAA national championships.
His younger brother Connor is the Director of Golf at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX. In 2024, his inaugural year at St. Mary’s, McCarthy, led the women’s team to the NCAA Division 2 national runners-ups. Last spring the men’s team finished in the final four for the national championship, the first time in school history. This year’s Rattler’s men’s team is currently ranked 8th in the nation, while winning two tournaments this past fall and one this spring. McCarthy began his coaching career at Shorter University in Rome, Georgia where he guided the men’s team to a berth in the national championships in 2022.
The McCarthys’ are sons of Kevin McCarthy, the former Director of Athletics and longtime basketball coach at SUNY Cobleskill.
