WEST KILL — A new workshop series aimed at combating rural isolation and fostering community resilience will launch in the town of Lexington this month.

The inaugural session, titled "Let’s Connect," is scheduled for Feb. 14 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at a local venue in West Kill. The event is free and open to the public.

Organizers say the initiative, "Tools for Wellbeing & Connection," was developed to address the unique challenges of living in a rural environment. While the landscape offers peace and privacy, residents often face significant barriers to social connection and mental health resources.

"Living in a rural area can be peaceful, but it can also feel isolating," organizers said in a statement.

The 90-minute workshop will focus on practical strategies for managing stress and anxiety, tools for emotional health, and ways to strengthen local social networks. Participants will also receive information regarding mental health support services available within the region.

The series is led by two experienced mental health professionals with deep ties to the Catskills:

Dr. Helle Thorning: A licensed clinical social worker, author, and educator who maintains a private practice in both West Kill and New York City. Thorning specializes in supporting individuals and families through healing and resilience.

Gail Spindell: A psychotherapist specializing in anxiety and depression. A resident of Jewett and New York City, Spindell has led the "Skillful Aging" workshop at the Hunter Library for the past four years.

Registration is required for the event. Interested residents can contact Thorning via email at hellethorningwine@gmail.com or by phone at (518) 255-8657.
