STAMFORD — The Party Theater presents In the Next Room (or the vibrator play) by Sarah Ruhl. Set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity and based on the bizarre historical fact that doctors used vibrators to treat “hysterical” women (and some men), this revelatory comedy centers on a doctor and his wife and how his new therapy affects their entire household. And for the first time, Ruhl's acclaimed play will be performed by an all female cast. It will be playing May 9-11 and 14-16 at 7:30pm at The Carriage House, 76 Main Street, Stamford.

Following The Party’s sold-out 2025 production of Dance Nation, this all-local cast and crew brings brilliantly to life a modern classic by one of our finest living playwrights. Dir. by Kristin "Kiki" McCalley. Starring Marisa Caruso, Annie Pevear, Alyssa Matthews, Adrian Shirk, Catherine Morrison, Sinzia Reese, Pareesa Pourian and Amy Rae.

Tamiko Robinson Steele | Assistant Director/Consultant

About The Party Theater

The Party Theater exists to ignite creativity, foster collaboration, and enrich the cultural fabric of Stamford, New York, the Western Catskills, and beyond. By blending professional artistry with community engagement, the company brings transformative artistic experiences to life through performances, festivals, community workshops, and new work development. Its mission is to celebrate and elevate local and regional voices while creating opportunities for entertainment, inspiration, education, and connection.

The Party was founded in 2018 by Artistic Director Kristin McCalley as an organization for performing and theater artists of all levels and backgrounds to collaborate within a democratic framework—departing from hierarchical theater structures that can be disconnected from artists’ needs and the interests of their immediate locale. Since beginning programming in the Western Catskills in 2022, McCalley has made Stamford the company’s permanent home, partnering with local artists Adrian Shirk and Marisa Caruso to serve the community.

The 2026 season marks The Party Theater’s fourth consecutive season of live performances and workshops in Stamford and is supported by the Robinson-Broadhurst Foundation, the Delaware County Office of Economic Development’s Tourism Grant, the Thompson Family Fund, and generous individual donors.
