HAINES FALLS — The Mountain Top Historical Society will host a specialized historical hike, "Rails on the Escarpment," on Saturday, May 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m..

The 2.5-mile trek will explore the remnants of several prominent 19th and early 20th-century railroads, including the Stony Clove & Catskill Mountain, the Otis Elevating, and the Catskill & Tannersville lines. These historic railways were instrumental in transporting thousands of travelers to legendary resorts like the Catskill Mountain House and the Hotel Kaaterskill.

Led by Paul LaPierre, Vice President of the Empire State Railway Museum and a lifelong railroad enthusiast, the hike will guide participants through key historical sites. The route includes the upper station site of the Otis Elevating Railroad and the roadbed of the Catskill & Tannersville Railroad. The tour will conclude with a visit to a former rail yard where artifacts remain from the 1940 track removal.

Participants are asked to meet at the parking lot located at the south end of South Lake in the North-South Lake Campground, part of the Catskill State Park.
