HALCOTTSVILLE   – Who would suspect that a small hamlet with a few  homes and a fire department would be one of the best places to watch a St. Patrick's Day Parade?

It all got started three decades ago when some members of the Halcottsville Fire Department wanted to celebrate their Irish heritage, according to Andrew Camillone, president of the fire department.

"It's the only place you get to see the parade twice," he quipped. The parade route is not lengthy, but they march from one end of the hamlet to the other, then turn around to march back to the fire hall where the auxiliary always feeds the masses with chili for a free will donation.

"Everybody just hangs out and enjoys the time," said Camillone.

They invite anyone and everyone to participate in the parade, from individuals to floats and drum corps. "Anyone who wants to come is more than welcome." There are always a few fire departments participating as well."

The parade route is painted green and there is usually a big shamrock or two.

While the parade is not honoring anyone this year , Camillone notes that their numbers are dwindling in the department. "It all falls on a few people at this point," he said. "But the spirit remains."

If you would like to participate, just show up. The parade steps off promptly at noon, so get on your green and make the trip, you won't be disappointed.
