DELHI – Delaware County District Attorney, Shawn J. Smith, announced today that Stanley Suchy, 79, of Stamford, pleaded guilty in Delaware County
Court on April 7, 2026.
In November of 2025, Suchy was indicted on four counts including three counts of Predatory Sexual Assault Against a Child, and one count of Course of Sexual
Conduct Against a Child in the First Degree. Suchy agreed to plead guilty to Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, which is a Class B Felony. His agreement includes a term of 10 years incarceration and 20 years of post-release supervision, registration as a sex offender as well as other fines and restrictions.
In court, Suchy admitted to multiple instances of sexual contact with a child under the age of 13 between 2010 & 2020. Victimization started when the child was around 2 years old.
ADA Rachael Collins prosecuted the case in Delaware County Court before the Honorable Judge John Hubbard. The defendant was previously arraigned at CAP Court where the Honorable Mathew Burkert remanded the defendant to the Delaware County jail without bail. After pleading guilty, Suchy was remanded to jail to await sentencing on April 21, 2026.
DA Smith thanked New York State Police Crime Victims Advocate Nicole Sheehan as well as the staff at Safe Against Violence for their advocacy work on the case.
District Attorney Shawn Smith also commended Investigator Adam Cernauskas of the New York State Police for his thorough investigation into this serious case. DA Smith said “These are difficult cases to investigate and prosecute. This one was especially complicated because the alleged sexual assault took place over a decade ago. Thanks to the dedicated professional efforts of the state police and our prosecutors, we were able to finally hold this defendant accountable for the atrocious acts he perpetrated against a young child and we were able to do so without forcing the child to testify in court.”
ADA Rachael Collins said, “This conviction shows that our office under the leadership of D.A. Shawn Smith, cares deeply about prosecuting individuals who victimize helpless children.” District Attorney Smith added “Based on the defendants age, I expect this will amount to a life prison sentence which is warranted under the circumstances.”
