I hope all of you stayed safe during this past week’s snowstorm. We had about seventeen to eighteen inches of that white fluffy snow. No one lost power here which was a good thing. I kept the Generator cleaned off just in case. Saturday afternoon I received a call that worship service needed to be cancelled for Sunday. Although they said the storm was not supposed to begin until noon on Sunday, at 7:00am it started coming down fast. I got to thinking about who needed to be out in the storm. While we sit in our homes snug as a bug during a snowstorm, there are those who are essential and must brave the conditions to get to their jobs. A huge thank you goes out to our Gilboa Town Highway Superintendent John Wyckoff and the great crew who diligently kept our town roads cleared both on Sunday and Monday. Knowing a storm was coming John and the crew were prepared to take care of anything that might have developed. Our town’s highway crew is the best of the best. Likewise, to all the EMS, Sheriff’s department, fire departments and NYPA employees who put their lives in harm’s way, we thank you all for keeping us safe. No one likes to brave the cold however; there is no better dedication than our work force here in Schoharie County. If you happen to come across any one of these workers, be sure to thank them for what they do.

I did get to watch both football games on Sunday. Now, I need to decide who I will be rooting for in the Superbowl. It will be between the Patriots and Seattle Seahawks in two weeks. I am sure lots will be glued to the TV that day.

If you are bored of having to stay put because of the cold and snow, you can always stop by the Gilboa Post Office where they now have a little lending library of books and puzzles set up in the lobby.

With thanks to CHS President Kim I received her great winter newsletter 2025/2026. Kim tells me that on February 21, 6:30pm they will be holding an American History and Culture Trivia Night. The doors open for this event at 6:00pm at the Conesville Fire House. Cost is $10 per person with a Maximum team of five. Refreshments will be available. Proceeds will go for the Americas 250-year celebration in Conesville. Be sure to follow my column for all events from Gilboa and Conesville.

My friend Barbara was busy getting the snow off her deck on Monday morning when I called to visit.  She, like me, enjoyed being out in the clear fresh air. Supervisor Terry called to make sure I was okay and said they would be ready to come down and plow me out anytime.  Thankfully, neighbor Pat plowed the driveway twice on Sunday and then again on Monday. Neighbor Alison tells me because of the upcoming weather forecast she almost decided to cancel her trip to Baja California.  She decided to take the chance and go. Then after being routed through Atlanta, she did make the wedding of the daughter of an old friend. She had a wonderful time. She managed to get the return flight rerouted through Minneapolis which was not supposed to be affected. Her main concern was getting to NYC. I have not heard if she made it back or not. I do know lots of flights were cancelled because of the storm.
