FLEISCHMANNS - Fleischmanns Mayor Samuel Gill announced that the pool will not open for the 2026 summer season at a trustee meeting on April 14th. The New York State Department of Health (DOH) inspection indicated a need to resurface and paint the pool area. The village has insufficient funds for the project, Gill said.
Trustees will work to secure grant funding to open the pool in 2027. Gill noted that if the village could get assistance with grant writing, the process would be quicker. Gill has contacted the Mark Project for support, though they are unable to assist at the moment.
“We just don’t have the funds right now,” Gill concluded.
Affordable Housing
In another discussion, residents and trustees discussed housing needs. The availability of affordable housing and the lack of rentals were mentioned. Affordable housing is generally defined as housing that costs no more than 30% of a household's gross income.
Gill noted affordable is generally under $1,000 a month, which does not exist in Fleishmanns. He added that the lack of industry does not help.
There are four units under contract as part of a state grant to revitalize the community. Properties include Doolittles, Community Bank, 1058 Gallery, and 926 Main Street. All units have apartments, and once revitalized, owners must follow rent stipulations designed to keep them affordable. Construction is planned for the summer and fall.
In addition, Gill said owners of La Cabana are working with the Mark Project to secure a grant for another building they own. The structure at the corner of Main Street and Little Red Kill Road, known locally as Mariah Court, has capacity for roughly 10 apartments, said Gill. If the grant is secured, he said, the apartments will become affordable housing.
Trustee Miguel Martinez Riddle noted major initiatives to improve transportation in the area. He added that the State views Fleischmanns as an underserved rural community, which helps the area stand out for grant awards and support. “Housing is one of the biggest ways we are underserved,” he said.
Other Business
The village is seeking volunteers to help with parking on Memorial Day. With two parking lots on Wagner Ave, Gill believes there is enough space for a decent crowd if someone helps organize parking for visitors.
Trustees are exploring options for veteran and senior tax exemptions.
The village is seeking a deputy clerk and treasurer.
Gill asked residents to keep sidewalks free and clear of bikes, strollers, and trash cans.
A resident raised a concern regarding a trailer parked in the village park. Trustees reported that the individual has been issued code violations. The sheriff’s office has been notified, and the vehicle will be towed if it is not removed.
Trustees Aaron Goldring and Yasmin Serabia were absent. One resident noted frustration with the Goldrings' lack of attendance.
The next regular meeting of trustees is scheduled Monday, May 11, at 6 p.m.
