MIDDLEBURGH - There's a last call for Hometown Heroes in Middleburgh.
The Middleburgh Rotary has placed a last call for Hometown Heroes banners in the village. There will be one final round and applications are due by April 1. Their e-mail is middleburghrotaryclub@gmail.com.
Over the past several years, the Middleburgh Rotary have put up about 55 Hometown Hero Banners, according to Rotary member Brenda Ferraro-Hanson. MidTel mounted these banners for several years before Middleburgh village took over this task.
The village, she added, has six or so to put up now and they will do this when the weather is warmer and they have the time.
Rotary members decided last May that the current banners that the village has to put up would be the end of the project, Ms. Ferraro-Hanson said.
"We are running out of places to put them," she added. Utility companies do have stipulations as to what poles the banners can be mounted on.
The red, white, and blue banners include the name of the Veteran, their rank, their branch of service, the war or theater they served, and the name or family sponsoring the banner (which is optional). A clear copy of a photo of the Veteran, in uniform, is required. The banners cost $200.
It has been an important project for the Rotary, Ms. Ferraro-Hanson said.
"We started this project to recognize and honor Veterans or anyone serving at the present time."
The Rotary started this project, which involves advertising the project to the public, providing applications to those interested, collecting money, and a picture from those who wish to purchase a banner, and placing and receiving the order, she said.
In February, Rotary President Wes Andrew announced that he has received five more applications so the group will continue the project for one more order to be placed.
