SCHOHARIE COUNTY — Schoharie land owners:  Time is running out for those interested in the 30 day Open Enrollment Period for landowners interested in joining an existing agricultural district.

Online applications must be submitted online no later than 11:59 p.m. on February 28, 2026.  It is important to note that this is the first year that all applications must be submitted online.  Those unable to submit electronically, must contact the Schoharie County Office of Agricultural Development at 518-295-8785 for alternatives.  Information needed for the application are:

1) Tax map parcel numbers

2) total acreage,

3) municipality where the land is located.

4)current and/or potential agricultural use.

The purpose of these applications is designed to encourage the continued use of farmland for agricultural production. As you drive through our small towns lately, more and more  farms are being divided up to make room for new individual homes and/or condos, or solar panels or wind turbines.  Through a combination of incentives and protections, this program helps safeguard farmland and limit the conversion to non agricultural uses.  As more developed land comes through, 4 legged forest animals become roadkill, just trying to keep up with where it is possible to find safe food and bedding without being injured by the numerous cars and trucks on our roads. And of course, everyone knows, lost farmland means less room to grow food like corn, oats and other grains.   If you are interested, please contact Caroline Myran,  Agricultural  Development Specialist of Schoharie County.  518-295-8785, if you have questions.  If you love your rural property, please know your options and benefits of classifying it as farmland.
