Racers sign in at the registration table where tote bags, seedlings, snacks and other items were available for the Earth Day 5K in Stamford on Saturday. The state Department of Environmental Conservation handed out seedlings, the girls scouts were providing activities and there were other things happening to celebrate the environment.
STAMFORD - There were 131 racers/walkers who left the finish line Saturday morning in the village of Stamford to get out in nature, pick up some seedlings and enjoy some snacks. The event, sponsored by the Stamford Business Alliance, raised money for Friends of the Catskill Scenic Trail, along which much of the run took place.
There were people of every age participating, with Charles Hollister crossing the finish line first with a time of 20:16 followed by the first female finisher, Alexandra Cappello crossing the finish line with a time of 20:22. Zee DeGregory posted a time of 21:29, the second female overall and first in her age group, at 59. Jacob Skelcy finished second for the men in 21:09 and third place overall. Third place overall went to Henry Mahar, with a time of 21:38 and Raylene Newman with a time of 24:24.
Racers stretched out for more than a quarter mile as the Earth Day 5K got off from Indian Trail Park in Stamford on Saturday. Strollers and walkers brought up the rear.
