TANNERSVILLE – Spring Is Here & It’s Time to Countdown to the Annual Mountain Top Earth Day Celebration!

We are so pleased to announce that the 2026 Mountain Top Earth Day Celebration is taking place on Saturday, April 25th from 9am to 2pm. Now in its 8th year, the theme of the Mountain Top Earth Day Celebration has always been Flora, Fauna & Free Family Fun!

The event kicks off at 9am at Fromer Market Gardens with a Spring Garden Workshop from Cornell Cooperative Extension. At 10:15, head over to the Mountain Top Library for the opening event and ribbon cutting ceremony, where our local officials make brief statements on the significance of Earth Day and the mountaintop.

If you’re coming for the Flora, we have you covered with the Cornell Cooperative, who will also join us with an instructional/info table throughout the day at the Mountain Top Library.

Also exhibiting, will be the Mountain Top Arboretum, another great local organization that works to preserve the distinct beauty of our region through sustainable horticulture, stewardship, and innovative educational programming. Fromer Market Gardens will also be present among the exhibitors at Mountain Top Library, so come and learn how they work tirelessly to provide the community with fresh, local produce, and maybe score a FREE tomato plant or two!

Speaking of FREE plants, Greene County Soil & Water will once again be donating FREE trees and saplings, which will be given away on a first come, first serve basis. And if you want to dig a little deeper, Mountain Top Library, in partnership with Library of Local, will be giving away thousands of FREE SEEDS, thanks to the generous donation of Jonathan Gross. The library also has gardening tools available to borrow!

Flora is only one of the best reasons to make sure you make your way over to Earth Day! Presentations by town historian Dede Thorpe, artist Matt Bua, Genevieve and Mellow the Owl from Friends of the Feathered & Furry, and of course, “The Birdman” from Robinson’s Wildlife Lectures, will also be part of the day’s scheduled programming.

If you’re feeling crafty, we have ongoing projects suitable for all ages! This year, Susan Kukle, Sheila Trautman, and Maureen Garcia will be leading the charge while you create Quilt Mural Art and/or Recycled Flower Sculptures. While you are creating your sustainable masterpiece, “Forever Green,” a Short Film selection from the Woodstock Film Festival will be playing on loop.

Make sure you make the time to visit all our exhibitors, and learn more about the great & often hidden work they do, to preserve the distinct beauty of the mountaintop. Scheduled exhibitors this year include the Hunter Rail Trail, the Mountain Top Historical Society, The Thomas Cole House representing the Hudson River School of Art, Peace Village, Camp Catskill, the Sierra Club, and the Catskill Center. Marvin Seligman will also have a special exhibit in the library gallery, detailing the intricacies and complex history of our watershed. This year, we will also be welcoming a new exhibitor, Al Gori, who will be setting up his solar-powered Merry-Go-Round!

Before you leave the event, make sure you sign up for the May 2nd (weather-permitting) Trail Clean Up.

As always, Earth Day is TOTALLY FREE, though we recommend bringing a few dollars for the bake sale, coordinated by Molly Hursh, as all the proceeds support the Friends of the Mountain Top Library.
