DELHI - Delaware County District Shawn J. Smith announced today that John Pierre Regazzi, 36, of Delhi, pleaded guilty to Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D Violent Felony, Forcible Touching, a Class A Misdemeanor Sex Offense, and Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor on January 28, 2026.

Regazzi appeared in Delaware County Court in front of the Honorable Gary A. Rosa on January 28th for his scheduled pre-trial hearings.  A jury trial was scheduled to commence on February 9, 2026, but during the court appearance the defendant decided to enter a guilty plea instead of moving forward with the trial.

The defendant pleaded guilty to Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D Violent Felony, Forcible Touching, a Class A Misdemeanor Registerable Sex Offense, and Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor. It was agreed that the defendant would be sentenced to 5 years in state prison, to be followed by 3 years of post-release supervision.  The defendant will also be required to register as a sex offender for at least 20 years upon his release from state prison, and there will be a final order of protection in favor of the female victim.

Pursuant to the Delaware County District Attorney’s office policy, the victim is not being named.

After pleading guilty, Judge Rosa remanded the defendant to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending final sentencing.  The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced on April 1, 2026.

Assistant District Attorneys Rachael Collins and Susan Mallery prosecuted the case.

District Attorney Shawn Smith commended the Village of Delhi Police Department for their thorough investigation into this serious case. DA Smith also thanked the victim advocates at Safe Against Violence for the support they provided to the victim throughout this case.

Smith stated, “I am proud of the work done by ADA Collins and ADA Mallery to secure this violent felony conviction and lengthy state prison sentence in this difficult case. Their comprehensive preparation for trial is what led to the defendant entering his guilty plea. While I am confident that a jury would have convicted the defendant for his criminal acts, this guilty plea spares the victim from having to testify.”
