SCHOHARIE – Ten aspiring educators and childcare providers recently earned their CPR certification at the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education Center.

High school students enrolled in Jessica Quackenbush’s program at Schoharie Elementary School earned the certification as part of their preparation to enter classrooms and childcare centers around the region and beyond.

“It’s an important skill to have for all of our students. Whether it’s for a coworker, relative or God forbid a student, knowing how to perform CPR is literally a life-or-death skill our students should know how to do,” said Quackenbush.

Indeed, according to the American Red Cross, early CPR after a cardiac arrest will more than double a person’s likelihood of survival. With 350,000 people dying from cardiac arrest in the United States annually, CPR is an important skill for the students to learn and for them to make the difference between life or death for someone.

Offered at Schoharie Elementary School and on the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical Education Center – Albany Campus, the Early Childhood Education program teaches high school juniors and seniors the basics and methodology of child development and early childhood education while also giving them a solid foundation in classroom arrangement and management.

Students also learn curriculum development for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and young children, as well as how to communicate and work with parents/guardians and staff in an education setting.

Students enrolled in the Albany Campus Early Childhood Education program earned the CPR First Aid certification in March.
